"Q. But is it not well to find out those who fancy they have attained when they have not?

質。しかし、実際には到達していないのに到達していると空想している人々を見つけることはよ
いことではないのか？

"A.　It is well to do it by mild, loving examination.

回。　優しく、愛をもって試みるのであるならばよいことである。

But it is not well to triumph even over these.

しかしそれを見つけて得意になろうなどということはよいことではない。

It is extremely wrong, if we find such an instance, to rejoice as if we had found great spoils.

もし私たちがそのような事例を見出して、大きな獲物を捕らえたかのごとく喜んだりしたら、そ
れは極端な過ちである。

Ought we not rather to grieve, to be deeply concerned, to let our eyes run down with tears?

私たちはむしろ深い同情をもって悲しみ、私たちの目から涙を流すべきではないのか。

Here is one who seemed to be a living proof of God's power to save to the uttermost; but, 
alas, it is not as we hoped.

ここに究極まで救われる神の力の生き証人のような人がいると思われたのに、悲しいかな、そ
れは私たちの望と違っていた。

He is weighed ill the balance, and found wanting!

彼をはかりにかけたところ、目方が足りないことが分かったとする。

And is this matter of joy?

そうしたらこれは喜ぶべき事柄であろうか。

Ought we not to rejoice a thousand times more, if we can find nothing but pure love?

もし私たちが純粋な愛以外の何物をも見出すことができなかったら、それこそ千倍以上も喜ぶ
べきではないのではないか？

"`But he is deceived.'

「しかし彼は思い違いをしている。」

What then?

だから何なのか？

It is a harmless mistake, while he feels nothing but love in his heart.

彼が彼の心の中には愛以外何もないと感じている限り、害のない誤りである。

It is a mistake which generally argues great grace, an high degree both of holiness and 
happiness.

それは、聖潔と幸福の両方に関する高い程度の偉大な恩寵について、普通に論じられる誤り
である。

This should be a matter of real joy to all that are simple of heart; not the mistake itself, but 
the height of grace which for a time occasions it.

これは単一の心を持っているすべての人々にとって、誤りがあることではなく、しばしの間でも
高い恩寵にあることを喜ぶべきことがらである。

I rejoice that this soul is always happy in Christ, always full of prayer and thanksgiving.

私は、この魂がキリストにあって常に喜び、絶えず祈り、凡てのことを感謝していることを喜ぶ。

I rejoice that he feels no unholy temper, but the pure love of God continually.

私は、彼が潔くない気質はなく、絶えず清い神の愛を感じていることを喜ぶ。

And I will rejoice, if sin is suspended till it is totally destroyed.

そして、もし罪の性質がその働きを停止したまま、完全に破壊されるに至ったなら、私は喜ぶ
のである。
