Sermon Title: "Beyond Death"

< Introduction > Today, according to the church calendar, is the 40th day since the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, the Feast of the Ascension. We have been giving sermons on the Gospel of John since the beginning of the year, and including today's passage, only two chapters remain.	<はじめに> 本日は教会暦では主イエスの復活から40日目にあたる昇天記念日となります。 年頭からヨハネによる福音書の講解説教をしてきましたが、本日の箇所を含めて残り2章を残すのみとなりました。
< Another Climax > In the previous chapter, Chapter 19, we focused on the Lord saying "It is finished" on the cross before passing away, and reflected on John's eyewitness testimony that He redeemed our sins with His own life. Today's Chapter 20 is another climax in the Gospel of John, following Chapter 19: "The Resurrection of Christ."	<もう一つの頂点> 前回19章は、十字架上で主が「完了した」と言われて息を引き取られた事に焦点を当て、私達の罪の代価を御自分の命で贖ってくださったという、著者ヨハネの目撃者としての証言に思いを寄せました。 本日20章は、ヨハネによる福音書の中で19章に続くもう一つの頂点、「キリストの復活」です。
<　The Empty Tomb　> When Mary Magdalene visited the tomb at dawn on the third day, that is, on Sunday, the first day of the week after the Sabbath on Saturday, the tomb where the Lord Jesus was buried was empty. She immediately told Peter and John, and they ran to the tomb, but all they found inside were the cloths that had wrapped the body. Here again, John is the only eyewitness account among the four Gospels. Peter and John returned home without knowing what had happened, but Mary was still weeping at the tomb. Suddenly, she saw two angels sitting in the tomb. The following is a quote from the Bible describing the situation: —They said to Mary, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She replied, “Someone has taken my Lord away from me, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize him. He said to her,“Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?” Mary, thinking he was the gardener, said, “If you have moved him, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him back.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” which means “Teacher.”	<空の墓> マグダラのマリヤが、三日目の明け方、即ち土曜の安息日が終わり、週の始めの日、つまり日曜日に墓を訪れた際、主イエスが葬られた墓が空になっていました。 彼女はすぐにペテロとヨハネに告げ、彼らは走って墓に行きましたが、中には遺体を巻いていた布が置いてあっただけでした。 ここでもヨハネは４つある福音書の中でも、唯一の目撃者として書いているのです。 ペテロとヨハネの2人は結局、何が起こったかわからないまま家に戻りましたが、マリアはまだ墓の前で泣いていました。ふと見ると墓の中に2人の天使が座っていました。 以下、状況を聖書から引用します↘ ――彼らはマリヤに、「女よ、なぜ泣いているのか」と言った。 マリヤは彼らに言った、「だれかが、わたしの主を取り去りました。そして、どこに置いたのか、わからないのです」。 そう言って、うしろをふり向くと、そこにイエスが立っておられるのを見た。 しかし、それがイエスであることに気がつかなかった。イエスは女に言われた、「女よ、なぜ泣いているのか。だれを捜しているのか」。 マリヤは、その人が園の番人だと思って言った、「もしあなたが、あのかたを移したのでしたら、どこへ置いたのか、どうぞ、おっしゃって下さい。わたしがそのかたを引き取ります」。 イエスは彼女に「マリヤよ」と言われた。マリヤはふり返って、イエスにむかってヘブル語で「ラボニ」と言った。それは、先生という意味である――
<　Two Points of Emphasis　> Now, I would like to discuss how important this account in chapter 20, namely the “resurrection of Christ,” is. As I mentioned last time, there are two characteristics to John’s writings: the “fulfillment of biblical prophecy” and his purpose in writing them. “Fulfillment of biblical prophecy” means that, in John’s time, the Bible refers to what we now call the Old Testament, so what the prophets of the Old Testament wrote was fulfilled exactly as he saw it. In other words, John emphasizes the perspective that promises made by God through the prophets are certain to come true. Another point is his purpose in writing this. It is "so that those who read this may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, that is, the Savior, and thus gain life."	<２つの強調点> さて、この20章の記述、即ち「キリストの復活」が如何に重要なのかをお話ししたいと思います。 前回でもお話ししたように、ヨハネの文書の特徴は２つ。「聖書の預言の成就」と彼が「なぜ書いたか」というその目的にあります。 「聖書の預言の成就」とは、ヨハネの時代、聖書とは今我々が言うところの旧約聖書を指しますから、旧約聖書の預言者たちが書いた事が、彼の目の前でその通りに成就した、という意味です。 つまり、神が預言者たちを通して語られた約束は必ずそうなるという視点をヨハネは強調します。 もう一点は、彼がこれを記す目的です。それは「これを読む者がイエスが神の子キリスト、即ち救い主であることを信じ、命を得るため」です。
<　The Essence of Christianity　> Today's passage, along with the "Atonement of the Cross" from the previous chapter, is the essence of Christianity. The "Atonement of the Cross" declares to us the forgiveness of sins. And this "Resurrection of the Lord Jesus" in chapter 20, as the author John emphasizes, means that God's promises will surely be fulfilled, and that when we read this and believe that "Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior," we also know that God's promise of resurrection, like Christ, will surely be fulfilled.	<キリスト教の神髄> 本日の箇所は、前章の「十字架の贖い」と共にキリスト教の真髄です。 「十字架の贖い」は我々に罪の赦しを宣言します。そしてこの20章の「主イエスの復活」は、著者ヨハネが強調するように、神の約束は必ず成就するという事と、我々がこれを読み、「イエスが神の子救い主である事」を信じる事は、我々もキリストと同じように死を越えて復活するという神の約束もまた必ず成就するという事です。
<　The Ultimate Problem of Death　> We will all face death someday. It is inevitable. If there were no limit to life, such as death, then all the problems we face in this life would not exist. Because with enough time, all problems will eventually be solved. However, human life is limited. Death is the ultimate problem for humanity. No philosophy or religion can give humanity the answer found in the Bible. The answer in the Bible is eternal life beyond death.	<死という究極問題> 我々はいつか死を迎えます。必ずです。 もし、死という命の限界がなかったなら、私たちがこの人生で抱えるあらゆる問題はなかった事でしょう。 時間さえあれば全ての問題はやがて解決するからです。しかし、人間の命の時間は限られています。 死は人間の究極の問題です。いかなる哲学も宗教も聖書にあるような解答を人間に与える事はできません。 聖書の解答は死の向こう側にある永遠の命です。
< Beyond Death > We die, but we transcend death and are resurrected in a glorious body like Christ, entering the eternal Kingdom of God. This is God's promise in Christ, the solution to the problem of life and death, and true hope. Death is not the end. Beyond it lies the eternal world. Are you living in this hope?	<死の向こう側> 我々は死にますが、死を踏み越えてキリストのごとく栄光の身体に復活し、永遠の神の国に入るのです。これこそが、神の用意されたキリストにある約束であり、人生と死という問題への解決であり、真の希望なのです。 死は終わりではない。その向こうには永遠の世界がある。あなたはこの希望の中に生きていますか？
< Prayer > Holy God, you have redeemed our sins through the sacrifice of Christ. Christ destroyed death and rose again, and we who believe in Him are given the sure hope of entering eternal life beyond death. May we walk with you in blessing for the rest of our lives in this world, embracing an eternal perspective. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Savior. Amen.
