| "Beware of that daughter of pride, enthusiasm. | 自惚れの娘である熱狂に注意しなさい。 |
| O keep at the utmost distance from it! |
そうです。それから最大限の距離を保ちなさい。 |
| Give no place to a heated imagination. | 熱狂した想像に全く所を得させないようにせよ。 |
| Do not hastily ascribe things to God. | はやまって物事を神のせいにしてはいけません。 |
| Do not easily suppose dreams, voices, impressions, visions, or revelations to be from God. | 夢、声、印象、幻あるいは黙示を神からのものであると簡単に想像するな。 |
| They may be from him. | それらは神からのものかも知れない。 |
| They may be from nature. | それらは自然からのものかも知れない。 |
| They may be from the devil. | それらは悪霊からのものかも知れない。 |
| Therefore, `believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they be of God.' | それ故「それらが神のものかどうか確かめずに、すべての霊を信じてはいけない。」 |
| Try all things by the written word, and let all bow down before it. | 物事すべてを書かれた聖書のことばによって試し、すべてを聖書に従わせなさい。 |
| You are in danger of enthusiasm every hour, if you depart ever so little from Scripture; yea, or from the plain, literal meaning of any text, taken in connexion with the context. | もしあなた方がわずかでも聖書から離れたなら、その通り、率直に文脈に従って書かれてある通りの意味から離れたなら、あなた方は常に熱狂の危険の中にいるのである。 |
| And so you are, if you despise or lightly esteem reason, knowledge, or human learning; every one of which is an excellent gift of God, and may serve the noblest purposes. | もしあなた方が、理性、知識、あるいは人的な学びを軽視したり軽いものと見なしたなら、あなた方は熱狂の中にいるのである。これらはいずれも優れた神の賜物であって、最も高貴な目的で用いられるのである。 |
| "I advise you, never to use the words, wisdom, reason, or knowledge, by way of reproach. | 私はあなた方に、ことば、賢さ、思考力、知識を、決して非難しないよう勧告する。 |
| On the contrary, pray that you yourself may abound in them more and more. | 反対にあなた方自身がそれらに益々富む者とされるように祈りなさい。 |
| If you mean worldly wisdom, useless knowledge, false reasoning, say so; and throw away the chaff, but not the wheat. | もしあなたがたがこの世の知恵、無益な知識、誤った論理を意味してそう言うのであれば、その通りに言いなさい。そして籾殻は捨てよ、だが麦は捨てるな、である。 |
| "One general inlet to enthusiasm is, expecting the end without the means; the expecting knowledge, for instance, without searching the Scriptures, and consulting the children of God; the expecting spiritual strength without constant prayer, and steady watchfulness; the expecting any blessing without hearing the word of God at every opportunity. | 通常の熱狂の入り口のひとつは、手段を抜きにして結果を期待する点である。例えば聖書を研究することなく知識を期待し、神の子らの指導者になろうとする、あるいは常に祈り、絶えず警戒することなく霊的な力を期待する、あらゆる機会を捉えて神のことばを聞くことなしに祝福を期待する。 |
| "Some have been ignorant of this device of Satan. | あるものたちはサタンの武器に無知であった。 |
| They have left off searching the Scriptures. | 彼らは聖書の研究をなおざりにした。 |
| They said, `God writes all the Scriptures on my heart. | 彼らはこういう、「神は私の心に聖書をすべて書かれた。 |
| Therefore, I have no need to read it.' | それ故、私は聖書を読む必要がない。」と。 |
| Others thought they had not so much need of hearing, and so grew slack in attending the morning preaching. | ほかの人々は、そんなに聞く必要はないと考え、朝の説教に出席することに熱心でなくなる。 |
| O take warning, you who are concerned herein! | 警戒せよ、自分もそうだと気づいた人は。 |
| You have listened to the voice of a stranger. | あなた方は異なる声を聞いているのだ。 |
| Fly back to Christ, and keep in the good old way, which was `once delivered to the saints;' the way that even a Heathen bore testimony of:`That the Christians rose early every day to sing hymns to Christ as God.' | キリストに飛んで帰れ。そして古き善き道を保て。それが「かつて聖徒たちに与えられた道」である。その道は異教徒にも「キリスト教徒は毎朝早く起き出でて神であるキリストに讃美する。」と証させたものである。 |
| "The very desire of `growing in grace' may sometimes be an inlet of enthusiasm. | 「恵みに成長する」という正にその望みがしばしば熱狂への入り口になる。 |
| As it continually leads us to seek new grace, it may lead us unawares to seek something else new, beside new degrees of love to God and man. | それは私たちを絶えず新しい恵みを求めることに導くために、私たちが何か新しいことを見いだすことに対する警戒心を薄れさせることに導き、神への愛の新しい段階からはずれさせるのである。 |
| So it has led some to seek and fancy they had received gifts of a new kind, after a new heart, as, | そこで新しい心につづいて新しい種類の賜物を受け取ったとかということを探し求めあるいは興味をもつことに導く。例えば、 |
| (1.) The loving God with all our mind; | （１）心を尽くして神を愛すること |
| (2.) With all our soul; | （２）精神を尽くして神を愛すること |
| (3.) With all our strength: | （３）力を尽くして神を愛すること |
| (4.) Oneness with God: | （４）神と一つにされること |
| (5.) Oneness with Christ: | （５）キリストと一つにされること |
| (6.) Having our life hid with Christ in God: | （６）私たちのいのちは神のうちにキリストと共に隠されている |
| (7.) Being dead with Christ: | （７）キリストと共に死んだものである |
| (8.) Rising with him: | （８）キリストと共に甦ったものである |
| (9.) The sitting with him in heavenly places: | （９）天のところにキリストと共に座している |
| (10.) The being taken up into his throne: | （１０）キリストの王座に引き上げられている |
| (11.) The being in the New Jerusalem: | （１１）新しいエルサレムにいる |
| (12.) The seeing the tabernacle of God come down among men: | （１２）神の幕屋が人々の間に下るのを見る |

| (14.) The not being liable to death, pain, or grief, or temptation. | （１４）死、苦痛、嘆き、あるいは誘惑のないものとされている。 |
| "One ground of many of these mistakes is, the taking every fresh, strong application of any of these scriptures to the heart, to be a gift of a new kind; not knowing that several of these scriptures are not fulfilled yet; that most of the others are fulfilled when we are justified; the rest, the moment we are sanctified. | これらの多くの誤りの原因のひとつは、誤りをするすべての人々が、なにかこれらの聖書のことばが心につよい感動を与えたと受け取り、それが新しい種類の賜物と思うことであって、これらの聖書のことばの多くはまだ成就していないし、残りは私たちが義とされた時に、あるいは潔められた時に成就している。 |
| It remains only to experience them in higher degrees. | 成就されていないものは、さらに高い程度の経験のために残されているのである。 |

| "Another ground of these, and a thousand mistakes, is, the not considering deeply, that love is the highest gift of God; | これら並びに千の誤りに関する他の根底は、愛が神の最高の賜物であることを深く考えないことであって、愛は謙遜、柔和、忍耐、愛である。 |
| humble, gentle, patient love; that all visions, revelations, manifestations whatever, are little things compared to love; and that all the gifts above-mentioned are either the same with, or infinitely inferior to, it. |
すべての幻、黙視、兆し、などなんでもは愛に比べれば小さいものに過ぎない。そして上記のすべての賜物は、愛に比べて限りなく下位のものなのである。 |
| "It were well you should be thoroughly sensible of this, -- `the heaven of heavens is love.' | この「諸天の天は愛である。」ということばをあなたがたが完全に理解できればよかろう。 |
| There is nothing higher in religion; there is, in effect, nothing else; if you look for anything but more love,you are looking wide of the mark, you are getting out of the royal way. | 宗教において他の何ものもこれより高いものはない。もしあなたがたが愛以上の何かを探し求めるなら、あなたがたは王道から反れて、広い道を探しに行くのである。 |
| And when you are asking others, `Have you received this or that blessing?' if you mean anything but more love, you mean wrong; you are leading them out of the way, and putting them upon a false scent. | そしてあなた方が他の人々に、「あなたがたはこの恵み、あるいはあの恵みをいただきましたか？」と尋ねるとき、もしあなたがたの意味することが愛以外の何かであるなら、あなたがたは彼らを道を踏み外すよう導いているのであって、彼らに誤った手がかりを与えているのである。 |
| Settle it then in your heart, that from the moment God has saved you from all sin, you are to aim at nothing more, but more of that love described in the thirteenth of the Corinthians.[1 Cor.13] | それ故神があなた方をすべての罪の性質から救われた瞬間から、あなた方はもはやコリント人への手紙第十三章に書かれている愛以外の何ものをも目的としないことを心に決めなさい。(コリントⅠ 13章) |
| You can go no higher than this, till you are carried into Abraham's bosom. | あなた方は、あなた方がアブラハムのふところに携えられるまで、これよりも高いところに行けることはない。 |
| "I say yet again, beware of enthusiasm. | また私は繰り返して言う。熱狂に気をつけなさい。 |
| Such is, the imagining you have the gift of prophesying, or of discerning of spirits, which I do not believe one of you has; no, nor ever had yet. | 予言の賜物とか霊の洞察力を持ったと想像すること、あなたがたのひとりがそれを持ったと私は信じないが、このようなものは与えられないし、これまでにもなかった。 |
| Beware of judging people to be either right or wrong by your own feelings. |
あなただけの感じ方で誰かを正しいとか誤っているとか判断することに気をつけなさい。これは聖書的な判断方法ではない。 |
| This is no scriptural way of judging. O keep close to `the law and to the testimony!' | 「律法と証」に近くありなさい。 |
